Scootin' Around the Lake

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
We have been playing with Cannon's new birthday presents every day. Every time we leave the house Cannon asks if he can ride his new scooter or his new bike . . . even if he KNOWS we're going to the grocery store!

Danny takes him to the lake at least once a week and he scoots his little self all the way around while Cason gets a joy ride in the wagon.

I captured yet ANOTHER sweet moment on camera. Can you believe it? These are totally unprompted hugs that occur spontaneously and usually just before a big WHACK in the face, but they are precious to me!

My Favorite Blogs (2012)

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Somehow, accidentally, I got on a "favorites" blogging kick. I told you our favorite toddler toys and our favorite ipad apps and today I thought I'd share some of the my favorite blogs.

Last year I culled through my Google Reader and "unsubscribed" from a ton of blogs. I just didn't have time to read everything. Only my favorites made the cut. The following are the blogs I read first when they pop up in my Google Reader. I love them. I learn from them. I bookmark them.

Enjoy!

Dear Baby
Oh Dear Baby. I've been following this little blog since before their first baby was born three years ago. Their video inspired our video announcement that Cannon was coming. They have back-to-back babies and live life to the fullest. Her writing is beautiful and her photos stunning - not because they are perfect but because they are full of life.

FIMBY
This blog is full of simple living, interest-based education stories, and heart. I love reading Renee's posts and often save them for when I have a nice hot cup of coffee to sip while I read. She challenges me to think outside the box and to be okay doing what is best for me and my family without worrying about what everyone else is doing.

A Holy Experience
Who doesn't already read this? Her words move me, make me feel, and bring me to tears most days. She makes me want to know the Lord more. Her heart is full of love and grace and truth drips from the blogposts. Her advent guide is my absolute favorite Christmas tradition and her book is on my "re-read" list.

Under the Sycamore
This mom is crafty, creative and a photographer. She quit her photography business to be a mom. I love that. She captures life through photos and words and she blogs what she wants (not what the readers tell her to). They just adopted a beautiful little girl from China and their story brings tears to my eyes.

Jasmine Star Photography
One of my favorite photographers. She shares quite a bit about running a photography business and the ins and outs of her photography journey inspire and challenge me.

Young House Love
Because who doesn't love a little home DIY from these two bloggers? And, let's face it, doesn't everyone who has a blog dream of making it a career one day - just like them? We have copied more of their projects than probably any other single source. If you're into doing things yourself, you must check them out!

Our Favorite iPod/iPad Apps (2012)

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

We've been gifted a few old ipods and then last year I purchased an ipad for the photography business. Needless to say the boys will never remember a day without Apple devices in our home. I try to find apps that teach something or are free (those are pretty much my two criteria), but have purchased a few apps when we were flying for added entertainment.

I'm always looking for highly recommended apps, so I thought I would share our favorites. If you have any other great ones to suggest, please leave a comment!

Fire Truck (by Good Glue) - $.99
Tap the screen and watch the fire truck leave the station, go on a rescue, put out a fire, etc. Cannon loves watching the fire fighters at work.

Cement Truck (by Good Glue) - $.99
There's not much to these apps except that you tap the screen to watch a cement truck go through it's various tasks in various settings. Cannon LOVES it.

Peekaboo Barn (by Night & Day Studios) - $1.99 or a FREE lite version
There are a few of these. Peekaboo Barn is the only one we've paid for but we've also enjoyed the free, lite versions of Peekaboo Zoo and Peekaboo Ocean. Cannon has liked this app since he was probably a year old. You hear an animal noise and tap the barn to reveal the animal.

Stop & Go! (by Shortstack) - $.99
Cannon plays this over and over and over again until night falls (literally on the game) and it shuts off. You simply tap the vehicle/stoplight/driver to see little scenes unfold.

Toddler's Seek & Find: My Zoo Animals (by Wonderkind) - FREE (additional scenes available for $1.99 purchase)
This is one of our very favorite apps ever. Cannon could do it when he was little because all you do is tap the screen at various points of the scene to see an activity happen, but it still entertains him today. We've also enjoyed Toddler's Seek & Find: At the Circus and Toddler's Seek & Find: My Little Town.

Splish Splash Inn (by Shortstack) - $.99

Amazing Shape Puzzle (by Joy Preschool Game) - FREE ($2.99 to purchase ALL of the puzzles)
This app has ALL kinds of puzzles from animals, to foods, to dinosaurs and Cannon loves clicking and dragging the pieces into place. This might be Cannon's all-time favorite app and is definitely the first one he chooses to play when he gets some iPad time.

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox (by THUP Games) - $.99
This app is worth $.99 in my opinion. Everyone recommends it, so I'm sure you've heard of it by now. Cannon gets to practice colors, counting, shapes and letters in the little activities.

PrestoBingo Shapes (but Spur Design) - $.99
This one is a little bit over Cannon's head, but I love the graphics. You're suppose to find all of the "shapes" in a picture (or squares/circles/etc.). Cannon can spot the obvious ones, but has more trouble seeing that the teeth of the animal are also triangles.

I Hear Ewe (by Claireware Software) - FREE
This is another app that's great for even little ones. All you do is tap the picture and hear what sound that animal or vehicle makes. Cannon plays this one forever.

PBS Kids Video (by PBS Kids) - FREE
Since I'm too cheap to purchase the SuperWhy app, this is how Cannon likes to why SuperWhy.

Favorite Toys 2012

I'm always scouring blogs for new toy and gift ideas for the boys, so I thought I'd post some of the toys/gifts that have already been played with the most this holiday seasons. (Let it be known that if you gave us a gift that isn't on this list, it doesn't mean we don't like it! These are just the ones I've noticed the boys playing with the most, every day, all the time!)

Cannon - Age 2 1/2 years
  • Plan Toys Road & Rail Transportation Play Set
  • Plan City Fire Station
  • Melissa & Doug Slide & Bake Cookie Set
This toy has revived the play kitchen. Cannon has spent more time baking cookies than any thing else over the last week.
  • Melissa & Dough Crawl Tunnel
This was actually a gift for Cason, but apparently it's appropriate for 2.5 year olds too!
  • Melissa & Dough Fold & Go Mini Barn
This toy has been played with endless by both boys. Cason carries around animals in his mouth while he crawls, and he's even learned some animal sounds while we play "farm."
  • Let's Pretend Builder's Toolkit by Roger Priddy
This is a puzzle/board book. Cannon LOVES "working" with the little puzzle pieces and pretending that he's building/painting/repairing things.
  • VTech Kidizoom Camera
Cannon plays with this daily. Just to warn you: this camera has pretty bad picture quality (image your cell phone camera from five years ago), but it's kid friend. I don't worry about him dropping it, breaking it, etc. so now I don't hover over him while he's photographing everything  in sight. I was letting him use an old point and shoot, but I was terrified of him dropping it (since I still use it occasionally when I want to throw a small camera in my purse). This way he shoots to his heart's content without me stifling his creativity by telling him to be careful, use two hands, etc.

Things I've Loved - 1st Edition

I've been a mother almost three months. Woohoo! Within three months there are a few items that I've realized I've used over and over again. My life would be significantly harder without:

My Brest Friend - I used this starting in the hospital and it was WONDERFUL. Pillows just couldn't support Cannon well while breastfeeding. He would slip down in between them and me and I would end up just holding him with my arms. The My Brest Friend (obviously named by a man, because what woman in her right mind really wants to go around calling a pillow by that name?) has the best support. I can literally strap that thing on and walk around the house with Cannon on it!

Woombie - We loved the Miracle Blanket (see below), but our apartment was so hot this summer that it terrified me to wrap him all the layers of most swaddle blankets. He didn't sleep well unswaddled, so we ordered The Woombie. We LOVE it. Not only is it cooler (there's even a lightweight, summer version that we ordered), but it's so much easier than swaddling him in a blanket. You just lay in on the Woombie and zip it right up. Much more convenient for middle of the night diaper changes.

You can see Cannon in his very own Woombie here.

Miracle Blanket - We used this for the first month and off and on for the second month. This was the only swaddle blanket Cannon could not escape from. Apparently we birthed Houdini because no matter how tightly we'd swaddling him in a blanket his little arms and legs always found a way out. And, while he would resist having his arms by his side at first, he would soothe within 30 seconds of being put in this blanket.

Sleep Sheep - If we have one sleep crutch it's this Sleep Sheep. Now, the sheep has four soothing sounds: a heart beat, ocean waves, rain falling and whales. Have you ever heard whales? It's an interesting blend of white noise and squealing. Would you believe that Cannon only likes the whale noises? I try to put him to bed to the ocean telling him it's so relaxing, blah, blah, blah, blah. He can be fidgeting and fussy, but the minute I turn on his friends the whales he perks right up and quiets down. Magical!

Lap Pads - These little changing pad liners have saved me so much laundry I can't tell you how much I LOVE them! I keep them in the diaper bag and on our changing table. Instead of having to wash the entire changing pad cover when he has a blow out or spits up, all I do is whisk this little pad into the laundry basket and replace it with a clean one!

Ultimate Crib Sheet - Have you ever changed a fitted crib sheet? In the middle of the night? Yea, neither have I thanks to these little inventions. Our fitted crib sheets are a fabulous yellow that goes with out grey and yellow theme, but they are a booger to get on and off. Mainly because you're having to lean over a crib bar and change the sheet from only one side of the crib (our crib's up against a wall). Well, these handy dandy sheets just snap around the crib bars, so I can pop them on and off easily if Cannon leaks through a diaper or spits up.

Moby Wrap - Now, don't get me wrong, I think there's a learning curve to using this thing that no one ever told me about. I just heard everyone gushing about how much they loved the Moby Wrap, but then when it turned out to be a little hard to use and slow to put on I was disappointed. It took me several weeks of trying it out almost every day to finally feel like I know how to use it well. But now that I know several ways of wearing the Moby Wrap it's the only way I enjoy taking Cannon out of the house. He fusses too much if I just leave him in his car seat in the Snap & Go, but if I wear him (facing me if he's sleepy, facing outwards if he's alert) he's content as a bug in a rug.

babycenter
BabyCenter Emails - This is not a necessity, but BabyCenter sends me emails every month telling me about where Cannon should be developmentally. They give me things to anticipate over the next month and little activities to do with him to help him grow. It's just informative and I like it!

The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD
Happiest Baby on the Block - Danny and I watched this video when Cannon was about a week old. It saved us countless headaches. It basically shows you five different soothing techniques that will instantly calm your fussing/crying/out-of-control baby. I couldn't believe how well and how quickly they would work to calm Cannon. The book was book to read, but the video was even better because you can see Dr. Karp actually doing the techniques. It was after watching this video that we realized we weren't swaddling Cannon tightly enough or shushing him loud enough.

Dunstan Baby Language -- Learn the universal language of newborn babies
Dunstan Baby Language - Again, a friend recommended this to me and I can't believe I ever lived without this. It's insane! It literally teaches you how to discern the sounds your baby is making to understand what they want. As Cannon has gotten older and has been on a routine/schedule, I know why he's fussing based on what time of day it is, but when he was little and eating and sleeping so frequently this was SO helpful!

Now, every baby and mom are different, so you might need a whole other set of tricks up your sleeve, but these are things that have made life easier for us! Hopefully they might be useful to you!
